The Prime Minister John Howard today called for calm, saying that the safety of all Australians, regardless of religion, is paramount. However he warned of the dangers of religious fundamentalism.
Several members of the Greens have called for stronger deterrents against the many illegal immigrants of European descent, generally english tourists, who flow into our country each year. Senator Bob Brown said "I understand how horrible their situation is over there, but we have to protect our way of life. Statistics show most violent crimes are committed by people of european descent. Christian terrorists have been bombing abortion clinics in America for years, you have to wonder what atrocities they will commit here if steps aren't taken soon." He also pointed to the rise of "European extremism" in recent years, suggesting that we could see a return to nazism in Europe. "If theres one thing the recent behaviour of Europe has shown us recently it's that it is no ally of Australia," he concluded.
Church groups have condemned such comments, saying that the behaviour of zealots like "Right to Life" groups and Fred Nile are not indicative of christians in general. When asked about the attack, as well as the multiple allegations of endemic child abuse, Archbishop Peter Carnley said "Such 'victims' often have it coming anyway. Those stewardesses were probably vampires".
To avoid similar attacks, Qantas has installed "wood detectors" in all of their airports, and security guards have been told to be on the lookout for anyone with pale skin.
